Love in the Ordinary

This brief instruction has an unusually wide reach. It does not set love aside for special occasions or reserve it for work we consider important. Its scope draws ordinary choices into view: how we answer a question, handle an interruption, finish a task, or speak when we are tired. Love is not merely a feeling to wait for before we act; here it describes the manner in which our actions are to be done.

That reach can make the verse searching without making it a demand to accomplish everything at once. We can pause over one conversation or one responsibility and ask whether our way of acting treats another person with care. Even a necessary correction can be offered without contempt; even a small favor can be given without seeking praise. The question is not simply whether we did the right task, but how we went about it.

Sometimes love asks for patience, and sometimes it asks for a clear, honest response. It need not mean saying yes to every request or pretending that an injury did not matter. This instruction gives us room to examine our motives without claiming we can see them perfectly. Today, we might begin with what is directly before us, choose a gentler word where we can, and return to that choice when we fall short. A small act done with care belongs within the reach of this verse.
